Inland waterway transport (IWT) infrastructure investments in the EU's Member States are predominantly supported by:
- Cohesion instruments European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Cohesion Fund;
- Financial means provided for the development of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). TEN-T program consists of hundreds of projects – defined as studies or works – whose ultimate purpose is to ensure the cohesion, interconnection and interoperability of the trans-European transport network, as well as access to it. TEN-T projects, which are located in every EU Member State, include all modes of transport: road, rail, maritime, inland waterways, air, logistics, co-modality and innovation.
- Marco Polo II program, created in support of modal shift actions from road to rail, short sea and inland waterway transport
- EC Research (EU FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME) projects. Ongoing RIS projects within an EU Framework programme are Mentore, Rising and Platina.
