Events > 5th CCNR RIS workshop, Strasbourg, 17 November 2017

Overview of the CCNR’s RIS activities: past, present and future

The workshop will be aimed at navigation professionals, at applications developers and at manufacturers and
companies that install RIS devices, at river police, at the authorities responsible for administering navigable waterways,
at those in charge of logistics, and at the River Commissions and other international organizations.

River Information Services (RIS) have expanded considerably in recent years. They play a significant role in improving the safe and orderly navigation of the Rhine. The CCNR supports the introduction of RIS along and on the river Rhine, including through resolutions concerning the implementation of these RIS technologies and the associated services.
For example, the CCNR adopted a resolution stating that vessels (with the exception of small craft) navigating the Rhine are to be equipped with an Inland AIS device and electronic chart display system. The workshop, organised by the CCNR, will be an opportunity to present the results of the survey conducted at the end of 2016, and will aim to evaluate the implementation of this resolution.
Likewise, mandatory electronic reporting will be extended to tanker shipping with effect from December 1st, 2018. The workshop will also be opportunity to approach this recent resolution.
The workshop will also and above all be an opportunity to hear the opinions and expectations of the industry, and other relevant parties, in order to inform the future work of the CNR with regard to RIS services. Finally, the workshop will encompass a wide range of RIS activities beneficial to navigation of the Rhine, thus enabling the CCNR to learn from the activities of different partners.
The programme for the day will follow.
