SBAS corrections via IALA beacons and AIS – Pilot project for Maritime and Inland waterways domain

News > SBAS corrections via IALA beacons and AIS – Pilot project for Maritime and Inland waterways domain

Pilot project for the transmission of SBAS corrections based on EGNOS via IALA beacons and AIS for Maritime and Inland waterways domain is underway. The project duration is 09/2017-01/2019, it is funded by European GNSS Agency.

Consortium of 5 organizations is running the project; GSA, ALG, Indra, ESSP, Alberding.

This project does not intend to cover a gap but to provide alternative solutions for the generation and transmission of DGPS information through IALA and AIS stations.

The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the operational performance of the transmission of SBAS corrections via IALA beacons and Inland waterways domain, while providing a detailed cost benefit analysis of the solutions proposed.

The project will allow the maritime and IWW service providers to have a clear understanding about the technical, operational and economic feasibility of the transmission of EGNOS corrections via IALA beacons and AIS/VDES.

The project has reached the end of phase 1. During this first phase, preliminary tests (without signal transmission) and CBA have been performed, which allow drawing promising conclusions, both technically and economically.

After these results, GSA has authorised continuation onto project phase 2. In phase 2 a total of 4 pilot projects will be implemented at various European locations. Two of them will be implemented using AIS/VDES in an Inland domain: Koblenz (Germany) and Budapest (Hungary). Test campaigns will last for a total of 6 months.
