Upgrading Flemish RIS Infrastructure

The Flemish TEN-T network of waterways contains about 600 km of waterways located on the North Sea - Mediterranean Corridor, North Sea-Baltic Corridor and the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. The proposed Action is part of a global project aiming to implement RIS in Flanders. It aims to modernise and adapt RIS to most recent standards.

The Action addresses the ongoing need for modernisation of RIS in Flanders and focuses on: an upgraded lock planning application that also works on locations that are not individually operated; an upgrade of RIS systems that complies with the new RIS standards; the renewal of gauges on the waterways (change from mechanical to electronic); increasing awareness amongst skipper of the RIS services offered and their advantages.

The main benefit of the Action will be the improved and extended RIS in Flanders. It ensures that the available RIS services and applications in Flanders are up to date (new lock planning application will be utilized on 45 locks on waterways managed by Flanders waterway managers), remain user friendly and can be used by a broader group of users. The updates of RIS services and applications should contribute to making inland navigation a safer and more efficient mode of freight transport.
