RIS Projects

This page includes an overview of RIS projects, funded and commissioned by the European Commission. The overview has been structured along two main categories:

Ongoing projects

PLATINA is a coordination action aimed at the promotion of inland waterway transport (IWT). The main objective of PLATINA is to support the Commission, Member States and third countries in the implementation of the NAIADES action programme.Organised according to the principles of NAIADES, PLATINA comprises five work packages dealing with specific policy areas: markets, fleet, jobs & skills, image and infrastructure.

IRIS Europe II is a multi-beneficiary TEN-T project focusing on further enhancement and fine-tuning of RIS key technologies, services and applications; in particular the (pilot) implementation of new harmonized RIS services especially at the level of fairway, traffic and transport related RIS services

Launched in February 2009, the EU project RISING will investigate for the next 3 years how the efficiency of co-modal transport-logistics processes using Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) can be increased. This will be achieved by providing seamless traffic and transport-related information as well as standardised IT interfaces to transport-logistics actors and players.

Completed projects

The key objective of MENTORE is to demonstrate the added value of EGNOS and Galileo at the service of tracking and tracing applications, with a long term view to supporting the application of National and European regulations already in place, accelerating the set-up process of regulations presently under development in support of EU policies, triggering the development of a new European regulatory framework that integrates national trends and strategies.

Also Danube aimed at promoting the use of inland waterway as a key mode of intermodal door-to-door transport chains and to prove the concept of a common source logistic database (CSL.DB)and as a key element to provide multimodal door-to-door transport services with inland navigation as the main haul.

Compris was a research and development project. Its main objective was to contribute to the implementation strategy and thus to make the RIS concept accomplishable throughout Europe.

IRIS Europe has been set up as a Europe-wide project in order to expand the functionality of River Information Services on the European waterway network. The project addressed the elimination of existing bottlenecks and defined additional functionality in the field of River Information Services (RIS) in the Danube and Rhine-Seine region.

M-TRADE (Multimodal TRAnsportation supporteD by EGNOS) addressed the introduction and deployment of EGNOS / Galileo technology and applications in the freight multimodality transport User Community.M-TRADE developed an end-to-end solution using EGNOS Commercial Services for remote asset and goods tracking & tracing, demonstrated it in real-life operative scenarios and evaluated its introduction in Customs and Border Control applications.

The Masterplan IRIS, which provides a framework for the coordinated implementation of RIS in Europe based on the RIS Directive, is considered as a main policy instrument to promote harmonisation and acceptance of RIS along Europe. The results of the Masterplan IRIS are need to be followed by upcoming RIS infrastructure projects within the TEN-T framework fostering the RIS implementation in Europe.
